Tontoma Poetry Jazz Session to Host Polish & UK Based Poet Bohdan Piasecki on the 24th August

Bohdan Piasecki is a poet from Poland based in Birmingham. A committed performer, he has taken his poems from the upstairs room in an Eastbourne pub to the main stage of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, from underground Tokyo clubs to tramways in Paris, from a bookshop in Beijing to an airfield in Germany, from niche podcasts to BBC Radio. In the UK, he regularly features at the country’s most exciting spoken word nights, festivals, and readings. He enjoys the creative chaos of big field festivals just as much as the composed concentration of literary events.
Bohdan founded the first poetry slam in Poland before moving to the UK to get a doctorate in translation studies. He has worked as Director of Education on the Spoken Word in Education MA course at Goldsmiths University, and was the Midlands Producer for Apples and Snakes between 2010 and 2017. Since 2012, he has been a regular Visiting Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham. He currently holds the post of General Manager at Free Radical, a Birmingham-based company creating opportunities for young artists with an activist practice.

So catch Him Live on the 24th August at the Tontoma Poetry Jazz Session Meet & Greet.

Tontoma Poetry Jazz Session Resumes on the 17th June with the Eid Al Fitr Special Edition

Eid al-Fitr translates as the ‘festival of breaking the fast’ and happens immediately after Ramadan, with festivity, day-time feasts and family gatherings. Customarily, family and friends dress up in new Eid clothes and visit each other’s houses bearing gifts. (expect traffic to increase in the days leading up to this, as people hurry to get new clothes, haircuts, henna and buy all the ingredients for their feasts). Many families will also visit the poor and needy in their own communities to make sure they have enough food and water to celebrate themselves. Charity is known as zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, and is particularly significant during Ramadan and the Eids.

So Tontoma Poetry Jazz Session will present on that day Poetry Showcases from Mos elm Poets ( Hawa Nanjobe K, Poetic Jamail , Lus the Poet and other regular poets in a way to celebrate Eid Al Fitr Special Edition.

Artist Biography                                                                                                 Moses Nakintije Ssekibogo (1 January 1985[ – 1 February 2018), also known as Mowzey Radio, sometimes refered to as Moses Radio, was a Ugandan musician. He was one of the main performers of the Ugandan music group Goodlyfe Crew together with Jose Chameleone's brother Weasel Manizo (real name Douglas Sseguya). Radio released his first solo song, "Tujja Kuba Wamu" in 2004 while at Makerere University before joining the Leone Island Music Empire in 2005. He started as a backup singer along with Weasel behind Jose Chameleone. His beautiful voice and talent saw him win women's hearts in the year 2005 after he had released a reggae love song called "Jennifer Njagala Ozine Amazina"; the official stage video for that song was filmed by popular Ugandan music promoter DJ Erycom. In the year 2006, Mowzey Radio released another song titled "Sweet Lady"; this was another masterpiece that introduced him to a large fan base in Uganda. In October 2007, Mowzey Radio, Weasel and Jose Chameleone toured the USA and the Caribbean. Before they returned home, Radio and Weasel had misunderstandings with their boss Jose Chameleone. Following disagreements between Chameleone and the two, they quit the group and formed Goodlyfe Crew, who became successful. Their first song was "Nakutadata", followed by "Ngamba" and so many other hits. He made music collaborations with musicians such as Rabadaba in the song "Ability" together with Weasel[5], produced by Just Jose.
Radio and Weasel had many hits, including: "Ability", "Akapapula", "Bread and Butter", "Hellenah" ft David Lutalo, Juice Juicy, Lwaki Onnumya, Magnetic, Tukikole Neera, Mr DJ, Mukama Talya Mandazi, Ngenda Maaso, Nyambula, Nyumbani, Obudde, Potential, Sitaani, Zuena, and "Neera", which dominated incessantly on most radio and TV stations in Africa.
Radio died on 1 February 2018 at Case Clinic in Kampala Uganda, from head injuries sustained in an altercation at a club a few days earlier. His death came after president Yoweri Museveni had donated money to cover his hospital bills.

MENTAL SLAVES OF THIS THING by “Adre17”

I grew up perceiving love as something so
red color painted
Heart structured and red Rose flower-scented
Before coming up with my own definition
I agree with love having number of Translations
And none agreed to be the final conclusion

Love ain’t game of hide and sick
Where one you see you can’t just poke and pick.

See, that moment in love  helplessly we’re falling,
It starts just like an air raid-siren wailing
Against ignored attention strongly appealing,
over somebody e’er dreamed or never.
We found ourselves in hearts’ detentions

Something operates just mysteriously as an
Iceberg wrecking MV Titanic in Atlantic,
and brings the impact of drowning the Motor Vessel.
‘Man-down!’ the floods are in the blood vessels,
altering regular heart-beats music too faster,
as if we’ve been racing against the Black Panther.
We lose control.

Some admit the heart ain’t smart but rather clever,
Some cry, some curse because they’d sworn
to surrender never,
But they get pulled over again,
they are gripped by the force as mysterious as
death magnetics, and they are Ghostly-haunted,
having the  uncounted sleepless nights.

There is no voice on this new heart’s choice,
we are so surprised, so astonished like the
congregation witnessing vandals defiling and
Stealing from the holy altar.

It’s defined as an active present,
we claim “it whispers from the distance”
getting all we need and changing our perceptions.

Some believe taking the under-dose,
they insist being conscious, no be two legs-drowned,
tantamount to the overdosed,
they become so scattergun binoculars,
the fools in stupor, Blindfolded moving objects-like,
unable to self-track their own foot-printed trajectories!
All falling with either sad or happy ending stories.

Sometimes it’s like snake’s venom causing death
call it Coup de Grace in some’s world-better-places.
The rich say it can’t be bought still,
the torn-pockets claim not to get it all.

We sometimes take it in a photograph,
viewing it from all possible angles,
the obtuse coming up with critics,
the acute observing if “all is well”, frozen,
he arts in frenzy, doomed in there where a shadow
never casts, and eyes don’t close.
Some looped in multiple spasms of anger,
in the battle against self-defeat,
hooked by vodkas, manhattans, the Gilbeys and all the liquors,
weeping with gusto while fighting for the ok,
trying to ignite the pop ups of joy which don’t promise to stay.
With this thing flying like a garden butterfly,
where some got lifetime hustles leaving no stone
unturned into forever searching for this thing.
As we struggle, repeatedly haunted
Defining itself as it’s worth fighting for
And that’s love For One you dying for
Remaining absolute surrendered defeated soldiers
None antagonistic, zombies to the inner orders
On so called this thing,
just sweeter as nothing
But still bitter like sting,

And we become the hard die, the solidmental slaves of thing.”
