About Us

Tontoma Team is a  Duo group. Formed by two artistic Perfomance Poets, who are, each endowed with unique styles of expression.

Tontoma is a Luganda word which means To recite. This was the form of education that our ancestors used to pass on information. It was usually in the evening when the moon, the stars glittered on the the sky that  our ancestor called us to sit around the fire and listen to all the tales.

There were folklores, parables, fables mythical tales all sorts of tales. Not forgetting Poetry.

Kitaka Alex is a creative Facilitator, Writer, Poet and a Pianist.

Kagimu Joshua is  a Poet and plays the thumb piano locally known as Akogo and the drums. He is also a visual artist.

This is the uniqueness we apply in all the Poetry performances, fusing poetry with diverse artistic means. Each uses his skill and then we work hand in hand to produce a unique performance.

What we do

The work  we do is divided into two segments;

• Tontoma Book Club(T.B.C) 

Here, we have Poetry on the Page and have other genres of literature we venture into. This is direct involvement with students in school, where we do monthly projects in poetry.
We target students in the writers club and literature students from different grades.
students come up with poetry pieces and later they are taken through the Poetry on stage in the T.P.P

• Tontoma Performance Poetry (T.P.P)

This is the Poetry on Stage

Under T.P.P, we have monthly spoken-word session where we fuse poetry with various kinds of Art. 

We fuse traditional and contemporary instruments, we have poetry fused with visual and fine art. Beat boxing, dance and music to create a unique and wide range of spoken word movement 

  Mission ; 

• To provide a platform for youth to express themselves artistically through poetry blending it with other genres of art.
• To enable youth explore the beauty in poetry toward personal growth and development.
